Church reaches out with love

The St Peters Anglican Church in Krugersdorp made it their mission to help distressed people in their community.

The Ikusasa Community Development Centre in Von Brandis Street received generous donations from the St Peters Anglican Church.

Reverend Peter Lenkoe, rector of the church says it is one of their missions to reach out to distressed people in Krugersdorp.

“We have a strong mission outreach project that we started about five years ago and therefore we try our best to make a difference in our community – that is why we decided to add this centre to our list this year.”

Members of the congregation collected goods such as clothes and food, which Lenkoe and members of the church handed over.

“The centre looks after street children who have nowhere else to go. We realised that they need food and clothing and decided to help them,” says Lenkoe.

“Children need food to build muscle, but they also need to feel loved and appreciated.”

He says this small contribution can make a big difference in their lives.

“We want to change their behaviour from negative to positive. When they feel they are not loved the children turn to drugs, alcohol, drugs, crime and become antisocial .”

He hopes the community will follow their example.

“We realise how easy it is to say someone else needs to do something, but sometimes we need to start doing it.”

Mpumelelo Khuze, a social worker at the centre says she is overwhelmed by the support received from the church.

“I can’t explain the feeling. At least someone understands our challenges and the needs of the children – donations like this make it so much easier for us to serve our community.”
