Fun ahead this school holiday
The Muldersdrift Holiday Club promises entertainment and upliftment.
With the winter school holidays around the corner Community Ministries Muldersdrift is getting ready for this year’s Holiday Club. Their aim is once again to reach about 1 500 children in the area.
Sam Ngoma, spokesperson for the Muldersdrift Communication Action Group (MCAG) and head of Community Ministries, says over the last 14 years the Holiday Club has made a profound impact on the children who attend as well as the community.
“Besides offering a haven for these children where they can learn, play and develop essential life skills, we also train young leaders to run the programme.”
This year they have partnered with Dirisanang Initiative, a non-government organisation that specialises in training young people to become effective in running projects and managing processes.
They already have recruited site managers for all the Holiday Club sites, which include Community Ministries, Swartkop Valley School, Bokamoso in Kromdraai, Video Centre and Monument Primary School in Krugersdorp.
Students from Monash University will run the new site at Zandspruit Primary School, while a team from Youth for Christ in Magaliesburg will run the new site in Monument.
The club caters for children aged between four and 14 from 30 June to 5 July in a structured programme that includes spiritual teachings, sports, arts and crafts activities, and games that enhance motor skills and life skills.
Most of these children have no access to recreation facilities and designed programmes that keep them occupied during the school holidays. By being part of the Holiday Club, they have something to look forward to at least once a year for five days.
The Club gives these children skills that enable them to go through life knowing their identity and life purpose. One of the original attendees is now a successful businessman, politician and pastor.
A further 16 youths who have been impacted by Holiday Club were accepted into Monash University and 24 others were employed by various companies in the Johannesburg area.
Ngoma says the costs to run the club effectively amount to R56 800 of which R15 000 has been raised so far. Raffles are being held in Muldersdrift to encourage the community to support the initiative.
“There are many excellent community initiatives active in the Muldersdrift area and we thank all those who have given so willingly to these worthy causes.”
