MEC briefs media ahead of matric exams
Province supports matrics ahead of their final exams.
The MEC for Education in Gauteng held a media briefing about the readiness of Gauteng matrics for their final exams that will begin on 27 October. The briefing took place at the Stoney Ridge matric revision camp in Magaliesburg.
A total of 143 647 pupils across the Gauteng province will sit for their National Senior Certificate (NSC) finals.
This will be a trying time for them as the outcome of these exams will determine their plans for the future.
This year a total of 101 265 full-time candidates and 42 382 part-time candidates registered to write the exams in 928 centres across all 15 districts in Gauteng. Almost 8 090 markers and 4 789 invigilators have been appointed in 11 marking centres across the province.
The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) established Matric Revision Camps in areas such as Magaliesburg, Hammanskraal and Vanderbijlpark. These camps will provide opportunities for intensified study and drill sessions aimed at increased content coverage as well as intensified exam practise.
The department divided the camps into three categories: High risk learners camps, Residential matric camps and Walk-in camps.
A total of 5 318 pupils from all 15 districts whom the department has identified as performing below the required standards will be commuted. to 15 camps.
From 13 to 24 October GDE will accommodate 13 712 pupils in 19 residential camps across all 15 districts.
The Department has a standing agreement with Childline to assist pupils who find themselves in stressful situations as a result of the pressure of these exams. Pupils can call Childline on 08000 55 555 for counselling and assistance.
The exam results will be released at schools on 6 January 2015 and will give a clear indication on how the province has performed.
“We are determined to improve the quality of public education in Gauteng continuously and build an education system that can compete internationally,” says MEC Panyaza Lesufi.
“We would like to wish all our Grade 12 pupils the best of luck and assure them that they have our full support. We are saying to them when combining inspiration and hard work, the reward is always fulfilling,” he concludes.
