Idols finalist is a local hero

He is living proof of what love, understanding and discipline can do and the good work that has been done there over the last half-a-century.

He is now in the top eight on M-Net’s popular singing competition Idols, but for all at Girls & Boys Town he is number one.

So says Girls & Boys Town’s CEO Lee Loynes about Vincent Bones, whose background and performance as a contestant has made him an overnight star.

The humble and soft-spoken 28-year-old spent his final school years at what was then Boys Town but since has expanded its services to include girls – and is now part of the Girls & Boys Town network in Gauteng, Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.

He is living proof of what love, understanding and discipline can do and the good work that has been done there over the last half-a-century, says Loynes.

As Vincent himself has said, “They taught me values. I loved it there.”

His family was not there for him and when he was 12, he took to the streets to be able to survive. From there he was given the opportunity to join Girls & Boys Town in Kagiso, where he matriculated.

He then lived with his grandfather in Eldorado Park and obtained a national certificate in contemporary music – he had learned to play the piano while at Girls & Boys Town.

“He is truly one of us, but we are happy to share him with the rest of the Idols fans. We’re sure he deserves to make it to the top,” says Loynes.
