Breeding is a Bitch

Every dog owner should have a copy of this easy to understand book.

People who enter the Rant-en-Dal Animal Hospital probably do a double take when they read the above title on a book lying on the counter.

If they look a little closer they will see that the book, a reference on dog breeding, has been written by one of the vets in the practice.

Dr Kurt de Cramer qualified as a veterinary surgeon in 1986. While completing his national service at an army dog training unit where service dogs were bred, he became interested in the whole breeding cycle of dogs. This book reflects that deep interest.

He, in fact, became interested enough to do his Masters degree in veterinary theriogenology (animal reproduction) and is now one of a handful of specialist vets in this field in the country in private practice. He is now working towards his PhD on successful preterm Caesarian Sections in dogs.

De Cramer decided to write this book as he had, through his studies and in his practice, come across many incidents of ignorance, and inexperience in first time breeders.

“This book will help those who are interested in breeding to avoid the many pitfalls and save costs,” De Cramer said. He had also, through the years presented around 13 seminars on the topic and realised that all of these should be put together and with extra information added, put into book form. The result is a book that is peppered with photos, information, and interesting whether you are a vet, dog breeder or anyone who works with dogs on a daily basis. All the information applies to any place in the world. In fact, every dog owner should have a copy of this easy to understand book as there is a section on nutrition, dog care from internal to external parasites and really good advice.

Breeding is a Bitch has received really good reviews across South Africa and throughout the world and De Cramer has received many very positive and flattering emails from both local vets and breeders and his peers overseas.

De Cramer is very involved in his practice and still lectures in animal reproduction and paediatrics at Onderstepoort where he is also mentored, scrutinised medically and ethically on his work for his PhD. He also sets exams for vet students, writes articles in various journals and evaluates other people’s articles. In between this he is a husband and father who uses the gym as a space to clear his head.

Breeding is a Bitch was proof read by another Krugersdorper, Eileen de Bruyn . The layout was done by Christina van Straaten and the book was published by Kejafa Knowledge Works and printed overseas.

If you are interested in buying your own copy of the book, contact or go to the Rant-en-Dal Animal Hospital.
