Pupils receive the gift of proper sight

Investing in pupils' futures, 34 pairs of prescription glasses at a time.

A group of 34 pupils from Pro-Practicum School each received a pair of prescription glasses to improve their poor eyesight and help them work towards a brighter future.

Standard Chartered Bank representatives Amal Desai and Kate van der Merwe, along with Dr Gift Nsele from Leratong Hospital and school teacher Magdi Kruger all worked together to assist the pupils to see, read and learn better.

The Standard Chartered Bank has been involved with the school projects for the past seven years, providing glasses to less fortunate pupils and recently started collecting food packages to send home with identified pupils for the festive season.

Guests were welcome warmly by the pupils in English, Afrikaans and Xhosa in the staff room. The children cheered with joy when they heard that each of them would receive a brand-new pair of prescription glasses.

Desai told the pupils about the day he realised he needed glasses in order to see.

“It made my life a whole lot easier,” said Desai.

The event also was attended by Bertie Jansen van Rensburg, the school principal who encouraged the pupils not only to take care of their glasses but also use this opportunity to improve their school work.

“It is not often that you get corporate organisations that will invest in you as our pupils. Thank you to Chartered Bank for having supported us for many years; and also thank you to Dr Gift Nsele, Pro-Practicum appreciates your involvement,” said Van Rensburg proudly.

Both sponsors received a beautiful piece of furniture made by pupils in the woodwork class.

Excited pupils were eager to show off their new ‘eyes’ to each other and the rest of the school.
