Roads closed due to petrol spillage

All roads were closed after a tanker spilled petrol following an accident.

Voortrekker Road was closed off in the early morning hours of Sunday, 8 February, after a SUV crashed into a petrol tanker resulting in hundreds of litres of petrol gushing down the street.

The accident occurred just before Burger Box while the tanker was on its way to make its last delivery at the petrol station on the corner of Shannon and Voortrekker Road.

A grey SUV drove straight into the tanker, impacting the side, causing some of the pipes to burst.

Community Policing Forum members (CPF) of Sector 8, along with Emergency Services Management (EMS), police officials, members from Mogale City Traffic Department and Netcare 911 paramedics worked around the clock to clean up the scene after the accident.

CPF Sector 8 members along Mogale City Traffic Department officials were responsible for closing off the roads and directing traffic through the suburbs.

Netcare 911 paramedics treated the driver of the tanker for shock and later rushed the driver of the SUV to hospital as he obtained serious injuries.

Sand was scattered over the petrol before Sasol technicians arrived on the scene to restore the truck and help clean up.

After 3am one lane from Ontdekkers Road approaching Krugersdorp was reopened while Voortrekker Road was only reopened at 4am, as the road was ready for early morning traffic.
