Beauty in the womb

Lots of fun at the Pregnancy Awareness Day organised by Netcare Krugersdorp Hospital.

Button Nose, Puffy Cheeks, Personality and Congeniality are the temporary names given to babies due to be delivered at the Netcare Krugersdorp Hospital.

These four soon-to-be-born babies were chosen as winners and got these ‘titles’ in the ultrasound scan pictures competition – their first beauty pageant – held during a recent Pregnancy Awareness Day hosted by the hospital.

Lizette Maré, a clinic nurse who helped to organise the event, said this day is held annually in conjunction with National Pregnancy Week.

Expecting others and mothers who have given birth got the opportunity to understand the pregnancy process and why expecting mothers sometimes feel they are carrying the world on their shoulders.

Several speakers discussed issues such as pregnancy niggles that include constipation, pain in the legs and back, nausea and weight gain.

They also focused on vaccines that babies need to get in the first six weeks after birth to prevent serious illnesses.

Constance Mundondo, who gave birth to her second child three months ago, spoke about the depression expecting mothers sometimes experience pre and post delivery.

Onashe was born prematurely at 32 weeks and since Constance’s first child was born 10 years before, she again had to learn what was required to ensure that her baby remains healthy in a world that over the last years has changed drastically as far as health care is concerned.

The Pregnancy Awareness Day in 2016 promises to be just as exciting and insightful as this one.
