Kudos to these dancers

The Mario Gomes Hip Hop Dance Academy sent 150 dancers to a national competition and did exceptionally well.

Dancers from the Mario Gomes Hip Hop Dance Academy (MGHHDA) have danced their way into bagging 35 medals at a recent national competition.

The academy sent a total of 150 dancers between the ages of eight and 21 to the annual Battle of the Giants Hip Hop Dance Championships, held at Sun City in the North West province.

Mario Gomes, owner and an instructor at MGHHDA said he is extremely proud as they managed to pocket 11 gold, 12 silver and 12 bronze medals while 16 dancers placed between fourth and eight place.

They have taken part in a variety of categories such as the Hip Hop Solos, -Duos, -Crews, -Formation Teams/Mega Crews, -Battles and -Street Crew categories.

Mario said the highlight of the competition was that his dancers, who were dancing in the World Trial Circuit, are now working towards obtaining points to be able to represent South Africa at the IDO Hip Hop World Championships in Italy in October.

“The results we obtained at the competition are for the whole of the country and for a small academy based in Noordheuwel, this is a great achievement.”

He said he is also currently supporting 30 underprivileged street dancers from the Munsieville, Kagiso and surrounding townships with free dance classes, transport and competition fees.

Mario will be hosting the West Rand Championships on 30 May at Mount Usambara to see who will be crowned the best dancer in the west.
