Pupils turn junk to funk

Pupils from Nic Diederichs strut it out on the runway in funky junk.

Rubbish and recycling never looked better, all thanks to HTS Nic Diederichs pupils.

The Grade 8 pupils were given a ‘Junk to Funk’ project, which formed part of their Arts and Culture practical exams.

Pupils were instructed to design and make a complete outfit in line with the theme.

The rules were simple; make use of recyclable (junk) material and have fun(k) making a new, complete garment.

A fashion show took place on 21 May where pupils had the opportunity to showcase their unique and creative designs.

Newspapers, plastic bags in the colours of the rainbow, sweets packets, CDs, cardboard, you name it, all made their way down the runway.

When a Jack Parow cap along with a waistcoat were modelled the interesting lining of the waistcoat was flaunted as the pupil struck a pose.

Barricade tape also made an appearance on white fabric.

Pleated rubbish bags in red, orange and black created an interesting look when the piece moved beautifully as the pupil made her way up and down the runway.

A well-constructed asymmetrical shift dress made from a woven potato-like sack was accompanied by a green plastic belt and bright jewellery also made an appearance on the super junk-funk runway.

Is it a bird, or is it a plane? No it was just one of the pupils who got hold of plastic bags and a whole lot of feathers, to craft a feather helmet, topped with more bright feathers.

Regardless of whether the looks were in line with what’s trending right now, these pupils from Nic Diederichs proved that recycling, up-cycling and having fun never will go out of style.

And the winner of the best girls outfit went to Reabetswe Moleka who showed true creativity with a pop of colour mixed with print.
