Cat rescued from razor wire death
"He most certainly would have died a terrible death if not for their intervention."
The Krugersdorp Animal Hospital was astir as a Gauteng Emergency Medical Services ambulance pulled into their parking lot.
Two very kind emergency personnel walked in, carrying a white domestic shorthair cat.
Evidently, Yvette Starke, a member of the Sector 4 Community Policing Forum (CPF) had alerted the Fire Department that there was a cat trapped in a razor wire fence adjacent to the Netcare Krugersdorp Hospital.
The Fire Department cut the wire to free the poor little fellow. The emergency personnel brought the cat to the animal hospital for assessment and treatment.
Veterinary nurse Karen Loreti admitted him and quickly got to work assessing his injuries. It was found that the mangled piece of razor wire (still stuck in his tail) had caused severe injury. In his struggle to try and free himself, the cat irreparably fractured his tail just above midway.

“Our doctors decided a tail amputation was necessary. The cat was dehydrated severely. A drip was set up and antibiotics and strong pain medication were given,” said Dr Vanessa Walter.
The cat was tested for feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) and feline leukemia virus (FeLV) and found to be free of both viruses based on an in-house Snap test. He was anaesthetised after which Dr Grant Hudson amputated his tail and neutered him. He is recovering well and remains in our care until he can be re-homed.
“We thank our generous clients who have donated to our hospital both of their own accord and as part of a raffle held in aid of the stray animals we assist, for covering the costs to heal this little cat. We also extend our sincerest thanks to all at the Gauteng Emergency Services and Sector 4 members for their help in saving this poor cat. He most certainly would have died a terrible death if not for their intervention.”
