[VIDEO] Revving up golden oldies

Local bikers show their softer side and take elderly residents on the ride of their lives.

A simple birthday wish by Johan van Eck was the start of many blessings to come.

The lay pastor and founder of the West Rand Bikers Church (WRBC) asked the congregation to donate toiletries instead of buying him gifts for his 50th birthday.

With the help of the various clubs involved with the WRBC, the bikers set off to the Golden Age Village in Wentworth Park to surprise the elderly residents.

Johan also represented his motorcycle club Dead Men Riding (DMR) along with Bjorn Knoblich from the Warlocks West Rand Chapter, Mauritz Oberhaulzer from RBA Wolfs, Sanette Cillers from the Joburg Eagles and Jacques Greunen from the Highway Motorcycle Ministries (HMM).

Johan and Bjorn greeted the seniors of the Village with a special message and blessing.

“Who wants this R200?” Johan asked, while proving why he is regarded as a born preacher.

A lucky resident was called to the front but Johan crumbled the note and later stepped on it, before asking her again if she wanted the money, to which she replied yes.

His message sent goosebumps through the audience as he explained, “Although life has stepped on us and knocked us down, it does not change how valuable we are in the eyes of our Creator”.

After Johan’s inspiring message, lunch in the form of delicious homemade soup was served to the elderly, accompanied by some good company.

Then the fun and games started as a few daredevils from the Village eagerly waited their turn to ride on some of the motorcycles.

The elderly residents of the village described the afternoon as wonderful.
