Riding with the Cradlesnatchers

For them age is just a number.

Muldersdrift — They cycle as if they still are 20 years old.

Members of the Cradlesnatchers social cycling club proudly wear their yellow T-shirts with their club’s name printed on. The club started about 10 years ago.

“Initially two older members and a young woman cycled across the Cradle of Humankind. That’s how the name came to be,” explained Peter Rossouw, member of the club.

The Cradlesnatchers just finished one of their three weekly morning rides when they met with the News for a cup of coffee. The club consists of 35 members aged 43 to 86.

“Cycling gives us something to do. We keep fit and healthy,” said Vivien Jefferies.

Vivien cycled the 94.7 Cycle Challenge 12 weeks after she had a knee operation.

John Carter, 86, a founder and oldest member, told that he once was run over by a car during a race.

“I picked up my bicycle and cycled home with my pelvis cracked. About 500 cyclists ran over my lost teeth that day.”

Every Tuesday, Thursday and some Saturdays the Cradlesnatchers meet at a coffee shop in Muldersdrift to cycle their routes of 40 or 70 kilometres.

“Anyone is welcome. Age is not an obstacle. We encourage everyone to start cycling,” said Peter.

These cyclists plan never to stop cycling. Who knows, cycling might be the real fountain of youth.
