Being deaf doesn’t hold her back

Anzunél Erasmus, a Miss Deaf SA finalist wants to change the world.

She does it all. From horse riding and shot put to beauty pageants.

Anzunél Erasmus, 24, took on the challenge of competing in the Miss Deaf South Africa pageant to help raise awareness about deafness and to educate those who can hear about the life of a deaf person.

Anzunél signed that she will be judged on her character, perseverance, poise, appearance, social abilities and interaction.

Magda Erasmus, Anzunél’s supportive mother said, “They want to see how well candidates communicate with the world so they could be ambassadors for the deaf.

“She is participating in the Mauritian Equestrian Games this year and competed in the 2013 Olympic Games in Bulgaria for shot put. Now, she wants to become Miss Deaf SA.”

Anzunél wishes for more people to understand that signing is not strange, it is just another language.

“I am deaf, but that does not mean I cannot speak. I just don’t do it very well because I can’t hear myself,” Anzunél signed.

From 26 September to 3 October, Anzunél and 12 other finalists will compete for the Miss Deaf SA title. The winner will represent South Africa in the 2016 Miss Deaf World pageant.
