Poisoned by generator’s fumes

Commotion outside a new takeaway shop leaves resident curious about the incident.

A new take away shop in Krugersdorp North had to be temporarily closed after only being open for one week.

An incident last Friday afternoon, 24 July, led to the closure of the shop after a lack of ventilation from where the shop’s generator was placed, caused 16 of the shop’s staff members to sustain carbon monoxide poisoning from the fumes of the petrol generator.

This happened shortly after load shedding kicked in.

A total of 14 staff members were assessed on the scene by Mogale City’s Emergency Services as a precaution, one of whom is allegedly pregnant.

One of the members were also later taken to hospital for further treatment.

Members of the Sector 3 Community Policing Forum on the scene assisted in cordoning off the area around the shop along with the help of members of the Krugersdorp police.

The Department of Health (DoH) were also called to the scene to investigate the matter, where after the shop was closed for the night.

By Saturday 25 July, it was back to business as the shop’s doors were opened.

Although carbon monoxide does not contaminate food, the food of the previous day had to be removed as per request from the department.

The News contacted the owner of the popular franchise who explained that the incident was minor and that no-one was hurt.
