Mining company donates new shoes

Mintails gave back to the community by giving children from a local school new shoes.

As the cold morning breeze swept across West Rand Primary Mine School, the Grade seven pupils stood in line, excitedly waiting to try on their new school shoes.

As part of the initiative of a local mining forum, aiming to ensure better cooperation between mining companies and the communities that are influenced by their mining activity, Mintails Mining helped their neighbouring school by giving new pairs of shoes to the children who need it most.

Reabetswe Nqoro, Mogale City ward councillor of the area, says he appreciates Mintails assisting the children with new shoes. De Waal Venter, a DA ward councillor, told the children about the relationship between a community like theirs and Mintails.

“After Mintails stops mining, we want the earth to look, and the communities to function, as it did before.”

Kabelo Mphake, Mintails Mining Spokesperson, told the children they are their neighbours and by helping them, they are extending a hand to them like a friendly neighbour would.

Principal Boniswa Ngejane says Mintails help them with different projects, like growing their vegetable garden, on a regular basis.

One by one, the children walked to the front to get their new shoes while their socks peeked through the torn pieces of their old shoes.

Most of the shoes were worn without shoelaces. When the News asked 12-year-old Bongani Rafu why his shoes were so torn, he simply explained that the shoes kept his feet warm during many soccer matches, but they have now outlived their usefulness.
