Spotted creature not a weird phenomanon
A wild animal was spotted lurking in the kloof, can you guess what it is?
The infamous kloof in Krugersdorp boasts not only with crime related incidents, but also with weird and wonderful creatures living literally in residents’ backyards.
While members of the Sector 8 Community Policing Forum were on a routine patrol one Tuesday evening, one of the members spotted a creature lurking in the kloof. A beautiful spotted Genet, a nocturnal, catlike mammal with short legs, made the kloof it’s home and was captured in a photograph by one of the patrollers.
The spotted Genet is a carnivore animal who is related to the Mongoose family and is commonly found in the Lowveld.
The preference of the cat is trees, rocky and wet terrains and caves close to water.
They are known for sleeping during the day and exploring and hunting by night for various insects and mice.
A Facebook post by the CPF 8 explains more about the cat which was spotted ‘spying’ on patrollers in the area.
Other animals which have been spotted in this area are impala, eagles, dassies, owls, porcupine, guinea fowls, plovers and snakes.
Yearly residents look forward to the breeding seasons of the guinea fowls and plovers who take over the area with the new members of their family.
“It is important for us as Sector 8 to protect the nature in this area which is inhabited by various wild animals who enrich our kloof,” CPF 8 Chairperson, Henry Carson, comments.
