Horses heal humans

"Horses are non-judgmental. They help and give to mankind, unconditionally."

A mere 15 kilometres from Krugersdorp, nestled in the Cradle of Humankind, lies a place where you might find yourself again – with the help of horses.

Registered healer and horse whisperer Yolanda Steyn believes horses can assist people on a healthier path. Women from all walks of life attended a workshop on 3 September at the Western Riding Academy to connect and be inspired by the healing power of horses.

Yolanda explained, “Horses are non-judgmental. They help and give to mankind unconditionally.

“Many of us have become detached from our emotions and are functioning on empathy or being dominated rather being assertive. We try to hide and suppress our negative feelings but for horses emotions are neither positive nor negative. For them, emotions are mere information. They don’t judge.”

Attendees stood in a paddock, waiting to be chosen by one of the many grazing horses to leading them through an obstacle course. Desiree Pan who attended the workshop for the first time and with no experience working with horses said she understood the healing power of horses.

“These horses are simply amazing. I feel safe around them,” she told the News.

Yolanda explained that no previous horse experience is necessary for these workshops. Anyone is welcome to attend the workshop.

For many children in Krugersdorp, working with horses, training them and becoming professional riders is a passion. Nulé Steyn, a young rider from Noordheuwel, said living among horses is a dream.
