[PHOTOS] And on the ninth day, God made dogs

The 9th Day Animal Shelter in Oatlands and Tarlton will help even the most helpless cases.

There is always a need for another animal shelter, and Charmaine Booysens was not going to say no to start one.

“Unfortunately, donations are scarce and bills need to be paid,” Charmaine, the local dog whisperer, 9th Day Animal Shelter founder and all round animal-lover, told the News.

But when one has a passion for saving neglected and abandoned pets, one fights with everything you have. Charmaine now tends to the dogs and cats at the Tarlton and Oatlands kennels seven days a week.

“I have volunteers who help me every day and being around the animals truly makes me happy.”

Now, with full kennels and more animals coming in daily, Charmaine has been evicted from using the Tarlton kennels and uses the Oatlands kennels to temporarily house the extra animals.

“We have been offered grounds on which we can build our own kennels, but we need building materials such as bricks, cement and chicken mesh.”

Charmaine started the shelter in January because there was a need for stray animals to be housed and kept healthy and alive for as long as possible.

“I will fight for every dog, even if it costs me everything. We try to find good homes for all the animals at the shelter.”

Adopting a Bruno or Mr Jingles at a fee of R700 will get your new companion microchipped, sterilised, vaccinated and dewormed.

“After a proper home check, of course.”

The 9th Day Animal Shelter is a registered non-profit and public benefit organisation that will benefit greatly from any donations the public offers. Contact Charmaine on 082 924 9337 if you would like to help.
