N14 delays a massive headache

The N14 roadworks can cause heavy delays during peak hour traffic, but there is still a way to get you on time.

16 months of heavy traffic to go – and road users are getting frustrated.

The News reported in July that the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport has notified motorists via a release on their website to expect delays on the N14 between Diepsloot and the Hendrik Potgieter Road intersection.

After disaster struck on Wednesday 2 September when a truck got stuck on the N14 north to Pretoria, motorists are now even more fired up about the road works.

Even if the department appeals for patience to all road users and apologises for the inconvenience caused, people still arrive late at work.

The News found that if you follow these alternative routes to and from Pretoria, you might be able to wake up a bit later, or leave work at 5pm, and still arrive on time.

Alternative routes (cut out and keep it close):

Turning onto the R512, you can decide on two different routes to Krugersdorp.

If you want to avoid the N14 entirely, you can drive past Hartbeespoort Dam. However, this route is much longer, but it might save you some time because it is less congested.

All these alternative routes are longer, but it will save you time you might loose on the N14. To keep yourself as informed about the N14 traffic delays as possible, try these tips:

• Check your Google Maps application. It shows you where there is traffic and how long it might take you to get through it.

• Keep you radio on in the morning and afternoon to find out if there are any accidents delaying traffic on a road you will have to take.

• Follow the N14 Roadworks group on Facebook for additional updates from your fellow drivers.

To try and keep traffic as light as possible, Mogale City Traffic Department directs traffic down the Krugersdorp ridge most mornings. Drivers said the traffic does flow better if the department blocks off traffic lanes. But as soon as you pass Muldersdrift, the morning and afternoon hold-up becomes unbearable, according to driver Vicky van Eck.

On the N14 Roadworks Facebook group, Vicky said she took one hour to pass the Lanseria off-ramp where drivers ignore traffic rules just to get moving.

“People go crazy on that stretch of road.”

And if you do decide to sit out the traffic, try to start a carpool where you switch out drivers every week. So even in this time of darkness, you still can surround yourself with new friends and long conversations.
