Locals make it big in New York

Young models, singers, actors and dancers set off to New York to make it big in the Big Apple.

Sing, dance, act and model. Over 3 000 contestants strutted their stuff in New York and local Figures Models and Talent was there too.

Figures Models and Talent Krugersdorp was one of 15 branches to fly to the Big Apple for the International Modelling and Talent Association (IMTA) convention.

“Over 3 000 contestants performed with the ultimate goal of getting signed by one of the 600 agencies present at the convention,” Louren Choudree, Figures Models agent told the News.

For one week, contestants such as Athena Xenophou took part in team singing, runway and swimwear competitions, among others.

“There were about 200 entries per category,” Athena explained.

Karmi Leigh, Marnu Rabie and Robert Erasmus were among the South African contestant who took to the stage, hoping to catch an agent’s eye.

“All of our entrants got a callback from the different agents this year,” Louren said.

She added that Figures Models South Africa placed fourth overall.

For the contestants, this was the first time going to New York.

“Everything is extra big,” said Marnu, who sings.

Louren said Figures Models sponsor eight of their models for the IMTA convention each year, but other entrants who qualify can go as well. She said they prepare each entrant for the convention and make sure they are ready for the big stage.

“Figures Models is a personal development academy where we train performers and develop their life skills. It’s not simply a pageant agency,” she said.
