Five twists on traditional Christmas desserts
Try these five recipes for a modern twist on traditional treats.
We all love a traditional festive feast, but this year, why not add a fun twist to create fabulous, modern variations of your timeless classics?
To get those creative juices flowing, Premierfoods group Snowflake has compiled a list of delicious and interesting variations of holiday desserts below.
Layers of custard, cream, cake and jelly – trifle is the retro Christmas dessert many can’t get enough of. Add apple pie, gingerbread, Christmas pudding and mince pies to the mix and you’ve got a festive sweet feast.
Liven up the menu this festive season with these deliciously exciting twists on classic holiday desserts.
Tantalisingly sweet
Instead of the usual red berries or cocktail fruits in trifle, try refreshing blueberries. Make a simple syrup by heating sugar and water, and add in blueberries. Spoon the mix onto the sponge as you create the different cake and custard layers. Ensure the final layer exposes the blueberries for a pop of colour.
Sweet tart fusion
Switch up the apples in your apple pie. A good combination is sweet Pink Ladies paired with tart Granny Smiths. Make a buttery salted caramel sauce by heating sugar and salted butter and drizzle over the filling before popping it in the oven. Serve with custard or ice cream.
Spiced revival

For dessert that fits a sunny festive season, try mince pie ice cream. Crumble mince pies (preferably without lids) into a food processor with vanilla ice cream and blend until smooth. Freeze the mixture for 2-3 hours or until firm. Serve with extra mince pies if desired.
Ginger ice cream sandwiches
For a refreshing twist on gingerbread cookies or cake, sandwich a generous helping of vanilla ice cream between two cookies or slices. Simply delicious.
Pudding pleasures

Use Christmas cake in two exciting, tasty ways. For festive chocolate truffles, make a ganache of equal parts cream and dark chocolate, and as the mixture cools and thickens add crumbled Christmas cake and finely chopped almonds. Pour it onto a shallow tray to set in the fridge. Scoop out using a teaspoon, roll into small balls and dip in melted chocolate to serve.
Also, try flavouring vanilla ice cream with crumbled Christmas pudding, cinnamon, nutmeg and chopped nuts. To serve, add lightly poached cherries in their syrup and enjoy.
