Alleged rapist abandons hope of bail

The 19-year-old man who allegedly hijacked and raped a woman in Ruimsig and was subsequently arrested has abandoned his bail application.

According to Krugersdorp Cluster spokesperson Captain Appel Ernst the suspect, who appeared in the Krugersdorp Magistrate’s Court on 29 December, abandoned his bail application while it was heard. He was arrested in connection with a case where a 29-year-old woman was allegedly hijacked in Cradlestone Mall’s parking area on 17 December and taken to a gravel road in Ruimsig where she was raped.

Her vehicle was used as a getaway car. The suspect remains in police custody. Various items belonging to the victim were found in his possession, which led to the arrest.

He was arrested in Krugersdorp West on 21 December by the Krugersdorp Police’s Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit after an identikit was released to the public.

He faces charges of hijacking and rape.

He will next appear in the Krugersdorp Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 20 January.
