Chinese shop owner killer convicted

A constable was praised for his determination that led to the conviction of a suspect.

Sandile Sizqw Madondo was convicted successfully late last year thanks to the dedication of detective Constable Glen Mothupi.

The conviction follows after Madondo robbed and fired a shot at a business owner in April 2014.

The accused entered a shop on Main Reef Road in Luipaardsvlei and forced the shop owner to the backroom while pointing a firearm at her.

“He took the suits on display and put it on. While dressing in the suits, the owner’s husband arrived and the accused pointed at him with the firearm. He demanded money and an argument ensued,” Sergeant Tshepiso Mashale, Krugersdorp Police spokesperson said.

The accused then shot the victim in the head and ran away.

On arrival at the scene Sergeant Sebetwa, and Constables Majila and Gaserotse met with witnesses who pointed them to the direction of the accused who fled on foot.

The officers quickly gave chase when they saw him running and managed to arrest him. They found him in possession of an unlicensed firearm and dressed in the stolen suits.

Unfortunately the victim, 50-year-old Mao Huei Chingm, originally from China, later died in hospital and a murder charge was added to the case.

Mothupi from the Krugersdorp Detective’s unit was assigned to the case.

“He worked very hard and put in many hours investigating. He gathered enough evidence and took witness statements for a successful prosecution. Krugersdorp’s Cluster Commander Major General Mateisi appreciates the good work done by the member to secure a good conviction in this case. He worked with passion and is dedicated to his work,” Mashale concluded.

Madondo was convicted for murder on 4 December at the Palm Ridge High Court where he was sentenced to life imprisonment and an additional 21 years for the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition along with business robbery.
