Three women were taken into police custody following their involvement in a moneymaking scam.
The suspects aged 22, 31 and 33 were arrested after they were caught scamming a 55-year-old person on 28 January.
The arrests follows a complaint lodged at the Hekpoort Police station in 2014 when the victim claimed she received an sms from James informing her that she had won a promotion of R900 000 and a laptop. The sms contained a reference number.
“She also alleges that she was informed that she must buy the airtime of R550 in order to get the prize. The complainant deposited the money into several accounts. The total amount deposited was R430.80 but she did not receive the prize. The last message sent to the victim was a disclaimer informing her that she had won the cash but will no longer get the laptop,” Constable Gloria Maswanganye, Hekpoort Police spokesperson said.
The hard work and dedication of the detective team at Hekpoort Police station under Detective Constable Seshoka paid off when they arrested the three suspects.
They have since made a brief appearance in court on 28 January where the case was postponed pending further investigation.
The Station Commander urges members of the community not to fall for scams such as this. The best advice is: “If you haven’t entered any competition, you cannot win anything and the minute that you have to pay for a prize, you are not a winner and you are going to lose a lot if you comply,” Constable Gloria Maswanganye.
