[PHOTOS] Day care in dire need

A local community centre founder is holding out a helping hand to another child-based institution.

What makes a community thrive is when one non-profit organisation helps another, especially when there is a need. This is, at least, the ideal that Trudie Naudé, founder of Mug and Tree Community Centre, strives to follow.

Trudie spoke to the News about her involvement at the Mam Rich Day Care centre in Munsieville where 37 children are dropped off every day and cared for by Rachel Makoro.

“Unfortunately these children have to spend their days in a shack with poor building and sanitation standards,” Trudie said.

The wooden beams holding up the shack’s roof looks like it might cave in. The little potty trainers stand in a row outside the day care, in full view of onlookers. But Trudie believes that even thought the day care is not suitable for the toddlers, their parents still pay about R200 a month for Rachel’s services.

“It is about the children. I make sure I donate what I can to this day care,” she said.

Trudie wants to help upgrade the day care by growing a vegetable garden, “because they eat dry pap every day,” and teaching Rachel how to manage the funds she receives.

The day care also received a friendly visit by one of Trudie’s acquaintances who heard about the day care. Anthea Koedyk took her granddaughter, five-year-old Charné Koedyk, along with toys she has outgrown.

Charné personally gave each child a toy and according to her grandmother, she learned the power of giving.
