Man falsely accused of rape sets record straight

A man fears of becoming a victim of mob-justice after being falsely accused of raping a minor.

A man broke out in tears after reading an article about him being accused of allegedly raping his girlfriend’s daughter last weekend.

*Wandile, who was arrested for the alleged rape, was released from police custody two days after his arrest.

He claims the fake complaint followed after he had visited his children, from a previous relationship, the previous weekend.

Upon his return to the house where he lives with his girlfriend and her daughter, he found that she had evicted him.

“She phoned me over the weekend and started accusing me of these bizarre claims,” he explained to the News.

In the week, one of his friends confronted him about a rumour that has been going around in the township that he had raped his girlfriend’s daughter.

On Wednesday, 3 February, Wandile was surprised at work with a visit from his girlfriend accompanied by the police to arrest him.

While in police custody, a sample of his DNA was taken to be sent to the lab for further investigation.

Two days later, he was released without paying bail or appearing in court, contrary to what was stated in a police report the News received last week.

“I heard nothing again, but I know I am innocent, why would I have been released if I have done something wrong?” he asked the News.

The News contacted the Kagiso Police’s spokesperson for more information about this sort of incident and the seriousness of being falsely accused of a crime, however, none has been forthcoming.

“I want to set the record straight and want people to stop talking behind my back because I am innocent,” he concluded.

The News will publish a follow-up article about the repercussions of being falsely accused of a crime.

*Wandile is a pseudonym and is used to protect the identity of the child he is referring to.
