Sandiso Ndlovu received R100 000 in Lombard Tyres’ annual year-end promotion.

The words “I hope it’s not the first key,” of Lombard Tyres’ managing director, Renier Botha were barely spoken when Sandiso Ndlovu, the first finalist in line, found that his key opened the Kia Picanto that won him R100 000.

Renier, along with the other 17 finalists, jumped with excitement and a bit of disappointment.

“I think I jinxed it,” he laughed.

Every year Lombard Tyres holds a year-end promotion, in which their customers enter a competition to either win a Picanto or R100 000. This year 18 finalists out of over 15 000 entries from all over South Africa were drawn by the company auditors, but only one could win.

“The promotion kicked off in October last year and ran until middle January,” said Yolandi Heyns, marketing and communication manager at Lombard Tyres.

“It was our most successful year-end promotion yet,” she said.

Customers had to spend R500 or more to qualify for the competition. The finalists were to meet at Kumho Africa Training Centre in Krugersdorp for the final draw. On the day, 17 fake car keys and one real one, were placed in boxes. The finalists each had the opportunity to use their key, hoping it would unlock the silver Picanto.

This is why Renier had hoped the lucky winner would not be the first one. The excitement and tension quickly came to a halt.

But Sandiso’s excitement only started when he had the lucky key. When Renier asked him if he would be taking home the money or the car, he laughingly said, “Show me the money”.

Sandiso, a Randburg resident, said he had just bought a new car and he would use the cash better.

“I will invest some of it and help out a charity I support,” he said.

The other 17 finalists did not go home empty-handed. Yolandi said each finalist received a voucher according the distance they had travelled to be at the draw.

“This was to thank them for coming all the way and supporting the promotion,” she said.
