Five new Rotarians welcomed
It is the largest number of Rotarians inducted at once for over a decade.
Five new Krugersdorpers who are considered leaders and changers in the community have been inducted as members of the Krugersdorp Rotary Club.
At the Golden Age Village, where the Rotary members meet, the five men and woman accepted their new titles as Rotarians recently.
On top of the largest number of members joining in over a decade, 23 February was Rotary International’ s 111th birthday.
“I have been a Rotarian at this club for ten years and this is the first time five new members were welcomed at once,” Anneas Balt, past district governor said.
The five members who were inducted are:
• Mareli de la Hunt van der Merwe
• William Blake
• Gerrit Bruwer
• Dieter Bock
• Ludwig Bock
Following toasts to the Rotary Anns, Rotary South Africa, Rotary International and past district governor Anneas, Rotarian Dennis Pretorius read the object of Rotary.
“We have over 1,3 million members worldwide and the organisation is growing. We still urge new Rotarians to come forth with their own ideas to help better the community,” he said.
The international organisation has grown from buying horses for those who need transport to giving $1,3 billion towards the eradication of polio.
“It is all about service above self,” said Dennis who is also a local politician.
Dennis also led the ceremony by toasting club president Colin Steyn and reminding the members of current social and economic issues. He made sure all Rotarians and Anns were well entertained while the homemade meal was served.
Dehlia van Staden, also a Rotarian and director at the West Rand Chamber of Business and Tourism, said one must be nominated by another Rotarian to join the prestigious club.
“Then all club members must agree on your membership. Not just anyone can join,” she said.
