Smooth sailing at registration booths

The registration weekend went by without any hiccups this year.

Thousands of Krugersdorpers flocked to the registration booth this past weekend ahead of the local municipal elections this year.

Christo Peyper, caucus leader of the Democratic Alliance in Mogale City, told the News the weekend was a success and that despite all the booths across the country having difficulties, in Krugersdorp there were no major hiccups.

“At Laerskool Kenmare we saw 598 new registrations alone. Most of them are new residents but a portion of them were also young voters who registered for the first time,” he said.

Lynette Zwankhuizen, an aspirant councillor who is a candidate for the DA for ward 20, told the News that a lot of young voters in the Krugersdorp North area also came to the registration desk.

“We had many more registrations on Sunday,” she said.

“We think it was because if the soccer and rugby games. Schools in the area also had activities and the Randfontein Show was in full swing,” Lynette added.

Philimon Pheelwane from the African National Congress said that there was no decline in registrations but that the interest from young voters seemed bigger.

The Independent Electoral Committee will release the registration statistics for each district before the end of the week.
