Women gang-raped – police on high alert

An urgent appeal has been sent out by the police for assistance with tracking down a group of men suspected of gang-raping a woman.

The alleged gang of rapists target women who are walking in open spaces at night between Tshepisong Central and Tshepisong West.

The latest complainant allegedly walked with two friends from Tshepisong phase 5 towards her friend’s place in Tshepisong West on 27 March at 9pm.

Suddenly a group of seven suspects armed with pangas and knives appeared and approached them.

The complainant tried to flee from the suspects but was caught by one of them.

“All seven suspects took turns raping the complainant and her friend. The complainant’s male friend was also undressed and their cell phones were taken,” Kagiso Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Solomon Sibiya said.

According to the complainant, some of the suspects were speaking Shangaan.

“This is now the second incident where victims were ambushed, robbed and ended up being raped by more than one suspect in Tshepisong. The first incident where a woman was ambushed, robbed and raped by six suspects took place on December.

“It is now time for residents of Tshepisong to stand up as one and report these suspects. They are from within Tshepisong, so someone may have noticed them before or after the incident. We want to continue to warn residents, especially women not to walk in open and dark areas at night. Rather use the streets where you are visible and there is at least safety in numbers. Do not give perpetrators an easy way to get to you,” Brigadier Sipho Ngubane, Station Commander of Kagiso Police station said.
