Small school with big dreams

Local pupils need to go big or stay home after winning the National Performing Arts competition.

A small school on the outskirts of Krugersdorp made a big name for themselves after winning a national competition.

A total of 38 pupils from Hekpoort Primary took the first place overall in the South African Performing Arts Championships and now have the opportunity of a lifetime.

This follows after the pupils took a first place at the Gauteng Performing Arts Champions as well which promoted them to the SA Champs in Rustenburg where they walked away with two gold and a silver medals in Rustenburg on 9 April.

At the championships the group performed four different dramatic pieces which included a dramatic, classical, contemporary and opening piece.

These pieces included the Water seun (silver), Annie (gold), Die Muur (silver) and Die Goggas (gold).

After winning the competition, these 38 pupils were presented with the opportunity to go to Los Angeles in California to compete in the World Championships of Performing Arts.

The opportunity not only gives these young and talented pupils the change to compete against the best of the best but also includes a tour to the famous Hollywood Walk of Fame, a bootcamp presented by some of the best drama and art universities and colleges and a visit to Universal Studios.

Sadly, as a small school, this dream seems unreachable as each of the 38 children would have to pay for themselves.

One of the parents, Mercia van Tonder, contacted the News to raise awareness not only about the incredible achievement of the pupils but also in hopes of getting sponsors for the tour which takes place in July.

“The amount of money needed for the tour sounds impossible but I thought to myself, go big or stay home,” the optimistic mom, Mercia said.
