Police turn to community

Police from various stations are turning to the community to help them fight crime.

Police are taking hands with the community to help fight crime by doing door-to-door campaigns and community meetings.

On Tuesday (19 April) the Kagiso Police Station commander, Brigadier Sipho Ngubane, held a community meeting at Tshepisong West to listen to the residents’ concerns.

“The residents raised, among other things, the residential and business burglaries, street robberies, armed robberies, poor light and visibility, rapes, illegal firearms and poor infrastructure that make it difficult to police areas,” said police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Solomon Sibiya.

“It had become clear that community members also needed to play a bigger role in helping police to secure arrests. The community committed to reviving the community policing forum and neighbourhood watch to help minimise the free movement of criminals,” he said.

Sibiya added the residents said they would become the eyes and ears of the community and refrain from taking the law into their own hands.

“Members at the station have promised to look into the community’s concerns and frustrations,” he said.

In Muldersdrift, the Krugersdorp Police Cluster embarked on a door-to-door campaign to address the recent surge in house robberies, break-ins and murders in Rietfontein, Nooitgedacht and Muldersdrift.

“Police, along with other non-government organisations, helped to distribute pamphlets with safety information,” said police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Hitler Ngwenya.

Police are urging communities to inform them, anonymously if they prefer, of any criminal activities by contacting the Crime Stop tip-off line on 08600 10111.
