Local teacher involved in ‘dead man’s’ fraud case
The mother of the Steyn siblings, who is a teacher at a local high school, smiled as she made her way back to the cells.
A local high school teacher and her friend made their first appearance in court today (25 July), in connection with the case of the man who ‘died’ in an incident in 2015 that has subsequently evolved into a R3,6 million life insurance fraud case.
The News recently learned that the 50-year-old mother of Leroux and Marcelle Steyn, both of whom are currently in custody as part of the foursome that stands accused of the murders of three Krugersdorp residents during May, was arrested for being in possession of a quantity of dagga a month ago. The woman is an Afrikaans teacher at a local high school.

“The two suspects aged 35 and 50 were arrested on 24 July,” said West Rand Police Cluster spokesperson, Captain Appel Ernst.
The News contacted the school at which the woman teaches, but the school declined to make any comment on her arrest and referred the News to the Department of Education for further details.
The mother’s 35-year-old co-accused friend, whose surname is also Steyn, had to be helped up the stairs to take the stand. She used an oxygen concentrator device throughout the hearing.
Both women, with their hair cut short and wearing camouflage jackets, indicated they wanted the proceedings to be conducted in Afrikaans.
A dog tag belonging to the mother of the Steyn siblings is in the possession of the police. It has the words “Electus per deus” (Latin for chosen by God), engraved on it. Both her children allegedly have the same slogan tattooed on their bodies.
In court, the State indicated that the women are to stand trial alongside the man mentioned above, who faked his own death in December last year.
The women were arrested during the weekend, after a warrant for their arrested was requested by the investigating officer, detective Captain Ben Booysen. The case was postponed until 2 August when the two will apply for bail in the presence of their attorney, who was unable to attend today’s proceedings. They will remain in police custody in the Krugersdorp police cells until their next appearance.
The mother of the siblings smiled at the court as she helped carry her friend’s oxygen tank to the police cells.
