Snake handling course in the Drift

Snake handling, depending on the group size, takes approximately two hours.

The next public Gauteng Snake Awareness and Venomous Snake Handling Course (which occurs on a monthly basis) takes place at Heia Safari Ranch on 30 July.

This course is a FGASA-endorsed course, is registered with the HPCSA, and is hosted by Johan Marais – internationally known herpetologist and author of numerous books on Snakes and Reptiles in Southern Africa.

The course starts at 9am sharp with a lecture on Snake Awareness, Scorpion Awareness, Spider Awareness and First Aid for Snakebite/ Scorpion sting. The lecture lasts about three hours, and covers topics such as the biology and behaviour of snakes and scorpions, myths, identification, basic first aid for snakebite and scorpion stings, and medical treatment of snakebites. The talk is followed by a written test.

Snake handling, depending on the group size, takes approximately two hours.

The snakes used for the handling session vary, but Puff Adders, Cape Cobras, Forest Cobras, Snouted Cobras and/or Boomslang are usually used.
