Magaliesburg Secondary School wins at Ubuntu Festival

Magaliesburg Secondary School was the top performer in the high school group at the 2016 Ubuntu Earth Festival held at their school.

The Magaliesburg Secondary School has emerged victorious, taking first place at the 2016 Ubuntu Earth Festival held at the school on 3 September.

Twenty-two high schools took part across KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and Gauteng in what has been dubbed the learners’ version of SA’s Got Talent. One hundred and eighty-three youngsters took to the stage in Magaliesburg to showcase their creativity and environmental awareness in the regional finals.

Participants had to choose between performing a song – solo, group or choral (cover versions and original music) or poetry – classic or free-style. They were judged both on their talent and on how well they expressed the message of preserving and protecting the environment, and addressed social challenges.

Magaliesburg Secondary School’s Head of Department, Miss Tshambo said, “It has been so exciting to compete in this competition and walking away with the prize went beyond our expectations. It shows that Magalies definitely has talent.

Thank you to Wildlands and Old Mutual for bringing us the Ubuntu Earth Festival.”

Old Mutual sponsorship manager Bandile Mngoma said: “The standard of the competition was incredibly high, which made judging a tough job. We wish to congratulate all those learners who shared their talent on the stage. It is exciting to see that the future of our country is in the hands of a generation that is very passionate and socially aware. As a company committed to the socio-economic development of our nation, we are proud to support projects such as these.”

Wildlands’ Deputy Director of Marketing, Lauren van Nijkerk, added: “It’s very encouraging to see that the schools all raised their game this year. This means that this competition is achieving one of its key objectives which is to unearth new talent in the communities where we work.

We are grateful to Old Mutual for believing in this talent search, as none of this would have been possible without their ongoing contribution.”
