After being found guilty of the murder and rape of a 45-year-old woman, Lucky Moses Sebande was sentenced to life imprisonment on Monday, 12 September.
Sebande raped and stabbed Martha Mzizi to death on 7 June 2015 in the veld at Kromdraai. Mzizi was returning home from visiting family in Kromdraai when Sebande attacked her.
When she did not return home, her husband started looking for her. He found her clothes scattered around in an open field. After alerting his family and community members, a search party was launched.
They found her naked body in a ditch two days later. The body had multiple stab wounds.
Intense investigation led Sergeant Ravhura and Constable Manzini to the suspect, who was seen running in the veld. After being caught and arrested, Sebande took the police officers to a room where they found his blood-stained clothes.
The case was transferred to the Palm Ridge High Court, where Judge Nemavhidi sentenced Sebande to life imprisonment for murder and 10 extra years for rape.
The investigating officer, Captain Jones Baloyi, worked very hard to ensure the perpetrator was brought to book.
“May he continue to do what he knows best and teach others,” Brigadier Baloyi, the Krugersdorp Police station commander said of Baloyi.
