Extreme excitement over free bicycles

Pupils rang their bicycle bells and laughed with pleasure as they sped around the park grounds.

Wide-eyed excitement on children’s faces and gasps of pure pleasure abounded as a number of Grade 8, 9 and 10 pupils took their first spins on their shiny new bicycles.

Pupils rang their bicycle bells and laughed with pleasure as they sped around the Magaliesburg Park grounds. They posed with their friends, bragging about their now most-prized possessions, as various photographers captured the moment. The News had the pleasure of joining in the fun-filled experience as the pupils rode excitedly around the grounds.

Three-hundred-and-fifty lucky school pupils and community members each received a fully equipped bicycle from Wildlands Conservation Trust on 15 September.

Mogale City’s Executive Mayor, Councillor Lynn Pannall, also attended the happy handover.

Pupils from various schools who helped with recycling in their area were the lucky ones who took these brand new bicycles home.

Pinky Selebogi, deputy chairperson of Child Welfare in Magaliesburg, said she was pleased with the efforts the Mogale City Council, the Management Development Institution and Wildlands had made to enable pupils to cover more ground efficiently.

“The bicycles will reduce the distance the pupils have to walk every day while they are picking up recyclable materials in the veld,” Pinky said.

“They will also assist the youngsters in carrying the materials over long distances. They are now able to load the materials onto their bicycles and ride to the collection boxes.”

Not only pupils from Magaliesburg benefited from this handover – a number of pupils from Azaadville’s Amid Timol Secondary School and Kagiso’s Madiba Comprehensive School also received two-wheeled companions.
