It was (almost) one for the record books

A charity fundraiser and world record attempt all in one – a great way to spend Heritage Day.

The community was invited to celebrate Bismarck’s birthday and raise funds for the 9th Day Animal Rescue Shelter, all while attempting to break a Guinness World Record.

Bismarck was rescued in September last year after he was allegedly used for dog-baiting. Dog-baiting is a blood sport used for entertainment or gambling in which one dog is put up against another chained or confined dog. The dogs bite and tear at each other until one is incapacitated or even dead. Dog-baiting is illegal in South Africa.

In order to break the world record, 2 355 individual braaiers were needed.

“Our event went very well. Unfortunately, there were not many braaiers and we were nowhere near breaking the world record,” Charlene Barnfield from the animal shelter said. There was also a 2,5 kilometre fun walk for the dogs to participate in.

Discussions are already in place for next year’s attempt to break the record.
