Krugersdorp’s very own life savers
Three Krugersdorpers participated in the Netcare 911 rescue officers' training initiative in KwaZulu-Natal.
Netcare 911 paramedics and rescue officers took part in a training initiative in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) recently.
Four Krugersdorp men, three of them paramedics with Netcare 911, and the fourth a civilian, took part in the training programme, which began at an Air Force base. As part of their training, Nick Dollman, Mark Spokoe, Jan Hietbrink and Peter de Cock had to hoist two people at a time into a helicopter using a strop system, then secure a patient in a Stokes basket and hoist him/ her up to the helicopter with the medic accompanying the patient.
As the day progressed, our life-savers continued to learn more life-saving skills in another area of KZN, namely Shongweni. There they also hoisted people up and down at the waterfall next to the N3, and with a pilot and engineer, they were trained to get out of the helicopter while it was hovering above a steep slope.
“It is a great relief to know that we now have a team that can be deployed day or night to rescue people from otherwise inaccessible areas or from ships far out at sea,” said Netcare 911’s media liaison officer, Chris Botha.
