Claw saves dog from nasty snare

Cora said she suspects the trap was set by poachers in the area.

A suffering street dog has been rescued by one of Community Led Animal Welfare‘s (Claw) agents after it became entrapped in a makeshift snare in an open field in Magaliesburg.

Residents in the area said they heard the animal crying for a few hours and decided to investigate. On Sunday, 25 September, they found the animal trapped in a snare and not moving. The residents managed to put the dog into a cage, but because they were afraid it might attack them, contacted Claw to assist in freeing the dog.

Upon arrival, Cora Bailey, founder of Claw, realised the trap was meant to strangle the dog, which was in dire need of saving. Cora took the dog in the cage to the Claw centre in Roodepoort, where she got the veterinarian to cautiously approach the animal and release the trap.

“It looked like a trap that would tighten the more the animal struggled,” Cora said. “We’ve named him Snare; the Afrikaans translation of ‘cords’,” she said.

Snare’s ribs and legs were badly hurt by the trap, but he has since recovered well.

Cora said she suspects the trap was set by poachers in the area. Nearby informal settlement residents seem to corroborate her theory. Snare has since been put up for adoption and like many other fluffy, furry, lovable friends, is awaiting a good home.

With the entire country celebrating World Animal Day on 4 October, Snare might have a chance to be adopted.

“To us, every day is animal day, but sometimes a national day is needed to remind people there are dogs in need.

So many animals are waiting to be adopted and we ask the community to visit our centre to rescue an animal instead of buying a puppy bred for sale.”
