Pupils help feed hungry reserve animals

Monument High pupils turned a school project into food for animals.

A class project turned in to a day of fun at the Krugersdorp Game Reserve when pupils from Monument High School opened their hearts to some furry friends.

The pupils had a class project which required that they complete a community programme and they decided to help those who cannot help themselves – the animals at the local game reserve.

“We are very glad and thankful for the food, since we have been struggling. It’s extremely expensive to feed the animals so this kind of help is very much appreciated,” said Alex Rubenheimer, from the game reserve.

The eager pupils arrived on time on Wednesday, 12 October, all excited, and soon started to prepare for their ride through the game reserve. Dignitaries such as the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Integrated Environmental Management, Annette Fourie, Department of Integrated Environmental Management (DIEM) representatives Morakane Mokoena and Leon van Zyl, Miss Tourism South Africa, Cindy-Lee Burrel, and the CEO of the Red Ants, who provide tight security for the reserve, Johan Bosch, all made it a noteworthy event.

The pupils donated four feed bales to the reserve, and were driven through the game reserve to see for themselves who the beneficiaries of their charity will be.

After spending time watching a lion devour his meat, it was time for them to be fed too, so they headed back to reception, where they received some lunch.

“We have been working hard to fix this place as it was dilapidated when we arrived here, so we are grateful to these thoughtful students,” said Johan Bosch.
