The Krugersdorp Bowling Club officially opened its greens for the 2016/ 2017 season on Saturday, 15 October.
The event was well attended, with over 55 members playing bowls on the newly renovated greens. A full, successful afternoon of bowling took place, followed by a most enjoyable braai.
The opening of the greens formed part of the club’s centenary celebrations, as the club turned 100 years old this year. The club was officially opened, way back in January 1916, by Sir Abe Bailey and Mr SB Noble.
The original grounds of the club were located in the centre of Krugersdorp town itself.
The club is the oldest club in the West Rand district, and their first league match was played in Pretoria on 17 December 1916 against a side from Brakpan.
The 1980s saw the closing of the old club house and greens when the club was relocated to the current premises in Monument, Krugersdorp. The grounds are known as the Stan Friedman Sports Complex.
The clubhouse was built and officially opened by the Mayor on 20 October 1984.
“Over the past 100 years, we have hosted some of the major bowls tournaments, including the Australian side that toured South Africa, as well as the South African Nationals, and most recently the Gauteng Open tournament,” said Andy Selby, vice-president of the club.
“Our current membership stands at about 120 active bowling members and about 35 social members.”
Visitors and prospective new bowlers or members are always welcome.
“We have qualified coaches, should you need them, and the club facilities are open seven days a week from 11am to 7pm. The greens are closed on Mondays for routine maintenance.”
