The festive season is just a wink away, but how prepared are you if any emergency should strike?
It can happen to anyone. During the festive season of 2015, 1 755 people lost their lives, as reported by Transport Minister Dipou Peters. This number was a 14 per cent increase on the previous year.
People planning to go away during the festive season are advised to plan their holiday to the finest detail possible, and to be fully equipped for any emergency that might occur. Check your vehicle, making sure that it is completely roadworthy – this can decrease the risk of your vehicle breaking down.
According to the Automobile Association of South Africa (AA) it is recommended that a 52-point check-up should be done before going on a long trip.
Here’s a list of some of the accessories you should have with you:
• First aid kit
• Fire extinguisher
• Reflective warning triangles
• Tyre gauge
• Jumper cables
• Flashlight and batteries
• Tow-rope
• Multipurpose utility tool
• Drinking water
• Warm blanket
Know the route you’re going to take, and be sure of the location of your destination.
Make sure that each family member carries a card listing all their emergency medical information.
Always remember to adhere to the rules of the road – this can guarantee you a safe journey.
