Hospital staff takes on blood shortage challenge

The country is experiencing a severe blood shortage and staff at Netcare Krugersdorp Private took action.

The staff of the Netcare Krugersdorp Hospital held an emergency blood drive on Thursday, 10 November, as the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is currently experiencing a severe blood shortage.

Sometimes it only takes the right motivation and a first time to donate blood. The staff decided to donate as well and set a 60 unit target for themselves.

“Patients’ lives can be in danger if there is no blood available,” Sister Sonja Menega said.

After donating blood, the long process starts. The blood that is donated can only be used after approximately three months as it needs to go through several tests first.

“In order to be a successful donor, the donor needs to go through several tests to make sure they are free from any viruses and diseases. There are also criteria to which the donors need to conform,” said the hospital’s client liaison officer, Liesl-Mari Simon.

Some of the criteria for donors are:
• Weigh more than 50 kg
• Good general health and feel well
• Between the ages of 16 and 65
• Lead a sexually safe lifestyle

Those who cannot donate are:
• Pregnant women
• People who have high or low blood sugar
• People taking certain medication

The News also spoke to a first-time donor who had a touching story to tell. Edunet Snyman was donating blood in support of her friend. “My friend is in hospital at the moment and needs three units of blood each day. This motivated me to donate,” said Edunet.
