Early Christmas gift for motorists
The AA announced that the prices of petrol, diesel, paraffin, and LP gas will decrease significantly on Wednesday, 7 December.
The Automobile Association (AA) of South Africa recently gave motorists an early Christmas gift when they announced the price of petrol of both octanes – 93 and 95 – will drop by 20 cents per litre on Wednesday, 7 December.
This drop is particularly welcome after the price had increased for two consecutive months.
The price of 93 octane increased by 44 cents in October, and then by 45 cents in November. The higher 95 octane petrol also experienced price increases, of 43 cents in October and 45 cents in November. The fluctuations cover up the fact that petrol prices in general are increasing. The price goes up by 45 cents and only decreases by 20 cents. After a month the price increases again, and then decreases by only a half or quarter of the previous increase.
Nevertheless, this month’s decreases received a warm welcome from South Africans waiting for their companies to close for the festive season and for the opportunity to head off to their holiday destinations.
Motorists using diesel-powered vehicles will also have a good festive month as the diesel price is expected to drop by between 31 and 32 cents per litre. Paraffin prices will drop by 28 cents per litre while LP gas drops by 17 cents per litre.
The Department of Energy said the price drop is due to international product prices decreasing.
“The rand appreciated against the US dollar during the period under review‚ on average‚ when compared to the previous period. The average rand/ US dollar exchange rate for the period 28 October to 1 December was 13,9125 compared to 13,9646 during the previous period. This led to decreases in the contribution to the Basic Fuels Price on petrol‚ diesel and illuminating paraffin by 2,02c/l‚ 1,96c/l and 1,96c/l respectively.”
