[WATCH] Two dead and 13 injured in horror bakkie roll

The horrific scene was intensified by the presence of numerous patients who needed life-saving interventions.

Paramedics declared two people dead on the N14 on the morning of 12 December, after the driver of a bakkie carrying 15 passengers lost control of the vehicle, which rolled multiple times across the highway.

The incident was reported at about 8am. Various emergency services personnel were dispatched to the scene and multiple ambulances and Advanced Life Support response vehicles arrived moments later.

The horrific scene was intensified by the presence of numerous patients who needed life-saving interventions to attempt to keep them alive.

After paramedics realised the seriousness of the patients’ injuries, they contacted Netcare 911 which in turn dispatched two helicopters.

Two patients were stabilised on the scene before being loaded into the Netcare1 and Netcare2 helicopters. They were airlifted to specialist trauma facilities in the area. The N14 from the Beyers Naudé Drive off-ramp to the R512 off-ramp was closed off to motorists to give the helicopters a place to land.

The remaining patients were treated for moderate to serious injuries and were transported to nearby hospitals for further medical attention.

It is believed most of the patients were seated on the back of the bakkie and were thrown from their seated positions when the bakkie started to roll.

Local traffic authorities were on the scene to investigate the exact events leading to the incident.
