CPF blows the whistle on crime
The success of the whistle project in areas such as Alexandra set about implementing a similar project in Muldersdrift.
The chairperson of the Sector 3 Community Policing Forum (CPF Muldersdrift), Shenan Cochrane, together with the Sector 3 Manager, Warrant Officer Van Zyl, launched a Blow The Whistle campaign with residents in the sector in time for the festive season.
Sector 3 encompasses the areas of Driefontein, Van Wyk’s Restant, Steynsvlei, Northvale, Diswilmar, Roodekrans, Rietvlei, Pinehaven Estate, Roodekrans, Featherbrooke and Ruimsig South.
Many residents in the Sector 3 area who live in staff quarters or informal settlements are victims of crimes from armed robbery to rape and theft. In most instances the victims are unable to call for help and any sophisticated alarm systems or armed reactions are beyond their means.
In a bid to assist residents, Shenan, having heard of the success of the whistle project in areas such as Alexandra, set about implementing a similar project in Muldersdrift.
“The Muldersdrift Farmers Association very kindly sponsored the whistles and we are hoping to distribute them all in the build up to the festive season. Whistles will be distributed to staff on farms as well as in informal settlements. Sound carries on the farms so these whistles should prove a great asset. Sector 3 is faced with unusual challenges as we have both rural and urban problems with a mix of farms, housing estates and big businesses.
“The Social Crime Prevention Officer from Muldersdrift will assist Warrant Officer Van Zyl with distribution and explain to the community how the whistle system works. If successful, we hope the project will be adopted by the chairpersons of the other two sectors that make up the Muldersdrift policing district,” Shenan said.
The first whistles were handed out to members of the community on Clinic Road in Driefontein, where the community were very excited about the concept and where crime has been very high, and the nearby residents of Entembeletu low-cost housing estate.
After this, the next area on the list will be Ruimsig and Diswilmar, around the Cradlestone Mall area.
It is hoped residents will support this project and that it proves effective in the fight against crime in Sector 3.
The Muldersdrift Sector 3 meetings are held on the third Monday of every month at 6pm at Riverstone Lodge. All residents within the sector area are welcome to attend.
