Someone’s life is in your hands when behind the wheel

Your first priority should be driving safely.

Speed limits are implemented for a reason, namely to save lives and keep motorists safe.

The majority of drivers consider speeding to be a very big problem, because many drivers exceed the posted speed limits. Sometimes this may be intentional, sometimes not. Whether you speed or not correlates with the type of person you are, your perceptual skills and your limitations. It also relates to the characteristics of the road and the road environment, and those of your vehicle.

Your first priority should be driving safely. Part of that means letting faster drivers pass you, and leaving enough space around you.

Another factor in the equation is that drivers are often unaware of what the speed limit is. Either the speed limit sign was missing, or the driver didn’t see it. But in most cases the road’s characteristics are insufficiently informative about the speed limit in force. It’s reasonably fair to say that this is an unintentional violation.

More reasons why motorists speed:

• They are in a hurry

• They generally enjoy driving fast

• They are bored

Slow drivers also cause frustration among motorists. Unfortunately, in the heat of the moment, when tensions are rising, motorists sometimes think that slow drivers are ignorant, or intentionally trying to annoy others.

The biggest problem with being a motorist is that you cannot communicate easily with the other motorists around you. In the real world, people can speak to one another and apologise, but in the world of motoring, communication is severely limited. However, you can use your indicators to alert fellow motorists to your intentions.

Drive safely and remember that someone’s life is in your hands when you are behind the wheel.
