Father drowns while trying to save daughter

The man was allegedly swimming towards his daughter to save her, but he was also caught in the rip current.

A 41-year-old Krugersdorper experienced a bitter end to his holiday after he drowned while allegedly trying to save his daughter from strong rip currents in George on Thursday, 29 December at about noon.

The George Herald reports the man was swimming towards his daughter to save her, but he was also caught in the current, and while his daughter was soon able to swim to safety, the man suffered a different fate.

According to Andre Fraser, spokesperson of the NSRI Mosselbay, a 21-year-old man saw the father was in trouble and swam towards him, but he was also swept away by the strong current.

Lifeguards on the beach where the man was swept away said he was allegedly under water for about ten minutes before he was found.  The Herald also reports the lifeguards tried to resuscitate him, but failed to do so and he was declared dead on scene later that day.

The 21-year-old man and the daughter of the deceased was taken to hospital for medical attention and the 41-year-old’s body was taken by forensic pathologists.

The deceased leaves two children behind, a nine-year-old and an eight-year-old both who are allegedly in Laerskool Kenmare, Krugersdorp.
